When should I seed and aerate my lawn?

The best time to seed and aerate any lawn is in the fall. By waiting for the fall, allow time for a proper spring pre-emergent application which limits the amount of weeds which pop up throughout the growing season. Additionally, new seed requires significant water in order to germinate and it can be difficult keeping a newly-seeded area adequately hydrated in the summer heat.

Why should I fertilize my lawn?

Not only do lawn fertilizers help to ensure you lawn is full of thick, green grass, they also help prevent weeds from forming.  A properly fertilized lawn is healthier, more attractive and more resistant to drought and stress.

What exactly do fertilizers do?

The lawn fertilizers we use at Ecogreen are made up of a combination of two elements: nitrogen and potassium.  Nitrogen stimulates growth while Potassium helps facilitate cell division and therefore increases the turf’s resistance to traffic, disease and drought.  Because the needs of each lawn are unique, it is important to both the health of your lawn and the environment to use a fertilizer which helps supplement the deficiencies in your particular soil.

What are grubs?  How do I know if I have grubs?  What can be done to treat the grubs I have and to prevent them in the future?

Grubs are the larvae of beetles which feast on the roots of grass.  Often the first signs of grubs appear in late summer in the form of brown, dead patches of grass.  Since grubs lay beneath the thatch layer of turf their treatment can be difficult. A granular fertilizer and insecticide combination is most effective.  After such applications it is imperative that the treated area receive ample water as the insecticide needs to seep through the thatch layer and reach the grubs beneath.  A grub preventative can be applied in late summer or early fall to help prevent grubs from appearing the next year.
